One of the most common question we get asked regarding maternity portraits on Maui is when the best time is to take them. When we first started shooting I thought you needed a big round belly. Over the years, however, we realized most of our clients came to Maui earlier in their pregnancies – it’s less about the belly, and more about the experience, and we’ve photographed maternity sessions as early as 14 weeks.
“Why?” you ask. To which I answer well, why not?
When I was pregnant with our second child we travelled to the Big Island for our babymoon. I was 12 weeks along. She was my little food baby, the bloat I blamed on too many carbs (mmm, carbs. Mmmm, buttterrrrr yeeeeeessssss.) We we had portraits taken, because well, no, my belly wasn’t huge but yes – it was an important trip for us. And you know what, we knew what was brewin’ in there. I knew she was there, because I had the pregnant glow in my cheeks and…ok, basically everything I smelled, ate, touched, saw or imagined made me want to puke out my guts. But, I digress.
Whether you’re in the first or third trimester, pregnancy is a brief and meaningful chapter. Yes, you feel sick. Yes, you’re bloated, no, maybe you can’t really see much more than a little pooch stickin’ out but I guarantee when time passes you’ll look at the images you had taken and smell the ocean. You’ll remember floating on your back, tipping your head back and hearing whales sing as you feel a first flutter or kick. Whatever the feeling, you’ll look back and remember the time before the arrival of your little one and want to have it all back. Pictures make that possible, and no amount of weeks pregnant can make up for the feelings you experienced during that time of transition.
