I was more than halfway through my pregnancy with our daughter when we drove with our son to Hana for Adam to shoot Sara + Anthony’s wedding day and we’d been looking forward to the trip and the wedding itself for months. It was an awesome drive over! But on our first night at our accommodation, the toilet flooded. I decided to drive back the next day with our 2-year-old, headed to our own home and functional toilet (pregnancy + broken toilet = no.) I know, pretty precious. BUT, listen, there was a hurricane threatening Hawaii at the time (which never eventuated) and in my active mind I saw it creating landslides on Hana Highway, being stuck with said clogged toilet and… yes.
I left veeery early in the morning to avoid any traffic and soon found myself in a maze of rain, fog and motion sickness (my own, and our son’s, he had no clue what was going on, poor kid ;)) Oh… I should mention I’m fearful of heights – when Adam drove us on the way there I averted my eyes but on the way back… not quite possible. GOSH it’s a gorgeous drive but would I recommend it heavily pregnant with a fear of heights? Nope. No. NONONO. After screeching my way though the winding drive, I had never been so excited to see Twin Falls and Paia. I called Adam after pulling over at Baldwin Beach.
“I MADE ITTTT! I’M ALIIIIIEEEEEEVVVVVEEEEEE!”
If you’ve been to Maui you’ve seen those “I survived the road to Hana” shirts. Guess what? I’m making a new one! I Survived the Road to Hana with a Screaming Motion Sick Toddler while 30 Weeks Pregnant with a Weak Bladder and Susceptible to Heights-Induced Panic (sold exclusively in XL due to degree of lettering required.)
The wedding? Went off without a hitch and Adam had an awesome time celebrating with an awesome couple! Me? Still coming down from the drive back, but that’s another story for another day (maybe.) Here are a few from the couple’s engagement session on Maui – it was a gorgeous sunrise indeed!
