You see the clouds on approach and your heart sinks: what to do on Maui when it rains? Maui’s rainy season runs from November through March. It’s an essential part of the island’s ecosystem, nourishing the island’s landscapes and creating the vibrant greenery and feeding waterfalls. Though rain may alter your outdoor plans, it’s hardly a deal breaker. Maui offers a variety of rainy day activities that bring just as much joy and connection to the island’s unique culture and beauty. From family-friendly attractions to cozy cafes for couples, here’s a complete guide to rainy-day activities on Maui, including what to do when the sun peeks back out – it probably won’t be too long!
Maui’s diverse microclimates mean that while Kapalua might be showered in rain, another may bask in sunshine. South Maui, including Kihei and Wailea, generally sees less rain than other areas, making it a potential sunny escape when West Maui or upcountry are experiencing downpours. A quick drive south could lead you to clearer skies, allowing you to enjoy the island’s natural beauty without dodging raindrops. This is why we tell our clients, especially those staying near Kapalua, to hold off on checking the weather too far in advance. Many weather outlets don’t account for microclimates, and are rarely accurate predicting weather patterns more than a day or even hours ahead.
Whether you’re looking for dry beaches or outdoor dining, South Maui often has something bright and warm in store, making it a worthwhile day trip on rainy days elsewhere on the island!

Though Maui has plenty of rainy-day activities, some outdoor adventures are best saved for clear weather to ensure safety:
1. Hiking Trails – It’s well known on Maui that if it’s cloudy over the mountains, you shouldn’t be on the trails or in ponds/waterfall areas. Wet trails can become slippery and dangerous, with the very real, added risk of flash flooding. It’s safest to wait for a dry day to enjoy Maui’s hiking spots.
2. Waterfalls – While the rain brings out the beauty of waterfalls, flash floods pose a serious danger that often results in rescue or death – this video of a flash flood at Waioka Pond should be enough to spike your anxiety to astronomical levels. Save waterfall exploration for a sunny day, and check with a local resident or news outlet for an update on waterfall and hiking conditions.
3. Swimming/In-Ocean Activities – Rain runoff causes brown water, which carries pollutants and animal carcasses into the ocean. This also creates a favorable environment for sharks. For health reasons, avoid swimming or snorkeling for at least a day after rain. If it’s drizzled lightly, you probably don’t have to worry. Use common sense and check local advisories for indicators of where to stay out of the ocean.
We photographed Ciara and Giancarlo’s sunset Land + Sea Session in Wailea on what was one of the gloomiest days we’d seen all year. The sun popped out the moment these two stepped on the sand. What followed was an epic sunset and intimate water portraits that were fun to create and capture. While this is not always the case for a rainy day on Maui, epic post-storm cloud sunsets are always a welcome surprise!
Sunshine or cloud, it’s time to plan your beach photoshoot in Wailea or West Maui. Consider booking a photoshoot with Love and Water Photography to celebrate the return of the sunshine, or bask in the mellow beauty of cool afternoon clouds. We specialize in capturing couples and families against Maui’s breathtaking natural backdrops. Cloudy skies provide soft, even light, making for beautifully unique images. Sometimes the best sunset come after a storm, and the most beautiful light is often created by cloud. Let us show you how beautiful a fresh beach photoshoot can be!
