Close your eyes and imagine yourself on a perfect November day strolling peaceful, historic Makawao town in upcountry Maui. A cool, comfortable breeze prompts a quick dip into a local coffee shop for a warm drink. The sun soothes your skin as you finish your last sips, wandering and window shopping along Makawao Avenue.
A set of wide windows offera glimpse into a boutique that is warm and welcoming. DRIFTWOOD, the sign reads, immaculately branded. Its rustic yet polished building is nestled just so back from the street. You enter and are immediately greeted by laid-back yet sophisticated ambience of the well appointed interior. Inside, a collection of jewelry, accessories and women’s clothing. Everything you see invites a glance. You leave with a bag full of unique and beautiful gifts for friends, family, and a little something for yourself.
Carrie Gebb has been a Maui business owner for 24 years. A lifetime of inspired, creative flair laid a firm foundation for her entrepreneurial spirit at a young age.
“I grew up sewing, designing, and pattern-making with my grandmother,” Carrie said. “I’ve always loved fashion.” Carrie owned Paragon Salon for two decades, but suffered work-related injuries that led her to pursue a new career path. She transformed the former salon into her new venture, Home by Driftwood. Situated nextdoor to its sister store, Driftwood Maui, Home by Driftwood is an undeniably peaceful, inspired space.
While her entrepreneurial drive has been curating businesses for over two decades, launching Driftwood has been Carrie’s proudest moment in business thus far.
“It’s a very personal experience to start a business that reflects your style and creativity and hope people resonate with your aesthetic,” she said, adding that she loves being an example to her kids as an entrepreneur.
And, as with every entrepreneur whose heart is the launching point of their business, there is a bigger purpose than simply existing in a world of sales transactions.
“Our goal is to enhance your life experiences,” Carrie said. “We want to help you be confident and feel great about yourself, whether for every day or a special event.” I can’t help but think of our photography clients who ask where to visit when looking for a photoshoot outfit on Maui. Driftwood is my immediate go-to recommendation for this very reason.
“For women especially how you feel about yourself in clothes matters,” said said. “We want to empower.”
Driftwood is located at 1152 Makawao Avenue in Makawao, Maui. Located on the mauka (mountain) side of the street, it is just across from a public parking lot. Parking is also available directly in front of the shop.
Can’t make it to shop in person? Online ordering is a convenient way to support this local business from afar. All items found in store can be purchased online, and worldwide shipping is available.
